The Backstreet Boys is an American boy band from Orlando, Florida, but also the title of a Cuban theater production. Where does the link with this name come from?
José Ramón Hernández: The play deals with male Cuban prostitution. Young men grew up in my generation with the male beauty ideal of six-packs, shiny bodies with a best-before date. BaqueStriBois (pronounced in the local accent) literally means “the streets of the back”. The location of prostitution can always be found in the back corner of the streets. This theater production offers an anthropological view of this phenomenon that sensitizes and does not want to moralize.
Many tourists see Cuba as a sex paradise. People always think about female prostitution, but male prostitution is rarely mentioned in this macho-like heterogeneous society. These practices have been the motivation to make this piece. Institutes don’t talk about it, so theater takes on the role.
De Backstreet Boys is een Amerikaanse boyband uit Orlando, Florida, maar ook de titel van een Cubaanse theaterproductie. Vanwaar komt de link met deze naam?
José Ramón Hernández: Het stuk behandelt mannelijke Cubaanse prostitutie. Jonge mannen groeide in mijn generatie op met het mannelijk schoonheidsideaal van sixpacks, blinkende lichamen met een houdbaarheidsdatum. BaqueStriBois (uitgesproken in het locale accent) betekent letterlijk “de streets of the back”. De locatie van de prostitutie is steeds in de achterhoek van de straten te vinden. Deze theaterproductie biedt een antropologische blik op dit fenomeen die sensibiliseert en niet wil moraliseren.
Veel toeristen beschouwen Cuba een seksparadijs. Men denkt steeds na over vrouwelijke prostitutie, maar zeer zelden wordt gesproken over mannelijke prostitutie in deze macho-achtige heterogene samenleving. Deze verbogen praktijken zijn de motivatie geweest om dit stuk te maken. Instituten praten er niet over, dus hun theater neemt de rol op zich.
Catharsis in Cuba
Challenging the Cuban spectator has been an intense but rewarding process. Several people admitted that the courage to put this story on stage has opened up their perspective. Men have experienced a very disconcerting look at the role of men within society. There is so much to tell about it, but people have to want to see it. It is a sort of acceptance of the eventful state of these generations. What many people do not realize is that customers used to have to use their bodies as prostitutes as a young man too. The heterosexual norm is so high that it translates situations into very difficult ambiguities. It is a complex piece that does not try to be correct, but preserves complexity and brings the social context to the surface.
(NL) Het uitdagen van de Cubaanse toeschouwer is een intens maar dankbaar proces geweest. Meerdere mensen gaven toe dat het lef om dit verhaal op de planken te brengen hun perspectief heeft geopend. Mannen hebben een zeer onthutsende blik op de rol van de man binnen de samenleving ervaren. Er valt zoveel over te vertellen, maar men moet het willen zien. Het is een soort aanvaarding van de bewogen staat van deze generaties. Wat veel mensen niet beseffen is dat de betalende klanten vroeger hun lichaam als jonge man zelf in de prostitutie moesten inzetten. De heteroseksuele norm is zo hoog dat dit de situaties naar een zeer moeilijk vatbare ambiguïteit vertaalt. Het is een complex stuk dat niet probeert terecht te wijzen, maar de complexiteit bewaart en de sociale context tot de oppervlakte brengt.
Reactions outside Cuba
Cuba sees the gaze of the outsider rooted in history in its political system. Prostitution is like a door that shows Cuba in an unpolished form. This context shows so much about the country. The most important part of the experience for an outsider is to see the everyday life of Cuba in the play. Authentic but hard.
(NL) De blik van de buitenstaander ziet Cuba in haar politieke systeem geworteld in de geschiedenis. De prostitutie is een als een deur die Cuba laat zien in een ongepolijste vorm. Deze context toont zoveel over het land. Het meest belangrijke onderdeel van de ervaring voor een buitenstaander is de alledaagsheid van Cuba in het stuk te aanschouwen. Authentiek maar hard.
